 Hello everyone! I  hope you are having a wonderful summer! I want to thank you all for the thoughtful gifts that you gave to me! My family and I have been enjoying all of the special treats that I received. I hope you're all enjoying some time off and I look forward to seeing you soon! I can't believe that you will be in middle school in just a few short months!  Congratulations! I am so proud of all of you and can't wait to see where life will take you! Talk to you soon!

Hello families,

I wanted to express my sincere thank you to each and every one of you for the opportunity to teach your children this year!  My first year of teaching fifth grade was an amazing success!  Each of your children have taught me so much!  They are truly some of the greatest kids that I have ever met!  This class really bonded and supported each other throughout the year.  It was easy for the kids to learn because they weren't afraid to take risks and try new things in front of each other.  I am so impressed by their kindness and their citizenship for each other and myself.  Your kids looked out for each other and for me and that is a bond that I will remember forever.

Thank you so much.  Enjoy your summer and please tell your kids to email or write me notes to keep me updated on all of their successes!  I will miss them!

Keeping Track of Grades

Just a reminder that your child has been keeping track of their English/Language Arts grades all trimester.  At any time, you can ask them what their grades are and they will be able to calculate their grades for you.

Some of your children will be bringing home the open-ended response portion of their reading test from today.  We've been practicing using information from the text and referencing the text all year and some students still are not doing so.  This week they have been given the opportunity to fix their responses in order to raise their grade.  Please encourage them to take advantage of this opportunity.

From the School Nurse...

Even children who have never had seasonal allergies before can develop them.

Your child could have allergies if he develops these symptoms: 

Sneezing

Itchy nose and/or throat

Nasal congestion

Clear, runny nose

Coughing

Itchy, watery, +/or red eyes

Spring pollens that trigger allergies are from trees, grasses, and molds.  The pollen count is highest between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. and again at dusk - when students are standing at the bus stop, riding the bus with open windows, walking/biking to school and during evening activities.  Pollens are tiny airborne particles that stick to hair, skin, and clothing. For that reason, it is helpful to keep outdoor clothing/shoes in one place in the house (away from sleeping quarters). Showering, washing hair, and changing clothes after being outdoors removes the pollens. Unwashed hair deposits pollens on bedding and pillows, rubbing pollens into eyes and nose during sleep.

If your child’s symptoms interfere with sleep, school, and pleasure activities, consult your health care provider (HCP). Prescription eye drops and nasal sprays may need to be part of your allergy arsenal if OTC medications don’t relieve your child’s symptoms.   If your child has a history of seasonal sensitivities, allergists recommend starting medications two weeks before pollen counts are predicted to rise.

If your HCP does prescribe medications, please use as directed for the duration of the allergy season. It is easier to prevent allergy symptoms than it is to treat them. Allergy medication given in the morning might not be working when your child comes to school during the high pollen times of day.

The Nursing Offices do not have any medications for seasonal allergies so if your child comes to school with these symptoms we can only offer water, hand / face washing, and cool compresses for irritated eyes. Please send your child to school ready to be a healthy learner.
